From what I have read there should not be any problem. We are about to switch a few project over to SP so we will be having both on a machine for awile. let me know what you find out

SP is barley beyond beta testing. One of our clients has bought into this new program so we have to cater to their wants and needs. We did a poll across our users to determine their preference and AP won hands down. Too many bugs still in SP

Actually, I found Smartplant to be more stable than Autoplant. I like to describe Autoplant as "A CAD program with a database on the backend", and Smartplant as "A database with a drawing package on the backend".
Yes, the overhead on Smartplant is amazing, and yes, they DO upgrade it monthly or so, but I never had the database lose any connectivity (the program can completely redraw a drawing by itself) or run into any very strange things that couldn't be explained.
The hardest part of getting used to Smartplant for Autoplant users is the fact that you are not using Autocad.

That is great to know Derek. I am taking the training here in a month or so and I will have to admin a program that I have never used. I have heard simular things about the stability of SP but there are stilll too many work arounds to get the drawings correct. I have also heard that the graphics are amazing.

One of the problems I run into with training is the fact that I never seem to be one of the ones sent to it, on the grounds that "other people need it more than you". I had to learn Smartplant by myself, with some of the training materials brought back from Huntsville. It is possible to do so, even though Intergraph's documentation leaves something to be desired.
I think if you take a step back from Autoplant that you will notice that there are a lot of things you have to do to get it working properly, as well. I refer to it as "the dance". If a user puts a foot wrong, you have some cleanup to do...
Plant design packages have a ways to go before ANY of them are bulletproof.

I'll second that! SP sounds pretty interesting.

Along with Bentley's Autoplant and Intergraph's Smartplant, there is another company working on a P&ID package. It would be interesting to see where they fall in the "bulletproof" area.
Anyone ever heard of Autodesk?

And the most interesting part is that one of Bentley's number one people went over to AutoDesk last year. She will put together an amazing package given the proper time and tools.
Will be interesting to see when it is released.

If it's the same greedy uncooperative M$oft loving CAD software makers buying all of my beloved 3D applications makers I'm thinking of, I've heard of em.
haha I couldn't resist. I was mostly kidding. :)

I wish I could help you with this, but I'm not working with Smartplant at the present time. In general, what kind of error were you getting?

Derek thanks for your concern.
Well the error that i was getting was....While opening Project Administrator. When we were trying to set a unit as start up project..It was asking for user id and password...Default user id is supervisor..I tried supervisor as password but it is not accepting....This type of behaviour is on 2 machines in my PC.
However i tried replacing Access.mdb file but still this issue persists.....m wondering i have to drop the idea of watching that machine working fine!!
Those 2 machines are becoming a nigntmare for me....

Are you using Access for Autoplant and Oracle for Smartplant?

Hi,
We are using Oracle for Autoplant and Smartplant as well

You've hit the limits of my knowledge - I have not used Autoplant with Oracle, or anything else other than Access. We've been thinking about moving to SQL server, but I'm not sure of the benefits that would give us.
I do believe your problem is a database configuration problem. Maybe someone else will hop in and give more guidance....

AArti,
what is the operation system ?
I remember that for Win2000 we had to install MDAC drivers to get things working. MDAC is a set of drivers from Microsoft that provide tools for communication between applications and databases. You can find them (for free) on microsoft.com or Tucows.com.
Last version I know about is 2.8
Ig you run XP it might be usefull to upgrade with latest patches and drivers. Maybe some dll or so that is used by AP got messed by another install ?
