View Full Version : Exchange Drawing Imported from a Duplicate Project

Ok, I think have a good question for everyone to ponder on.

I have 1 project in 2 different locations. One on my personal hard drive and the other is out on the server. Both have the same Project ID's and same everything.

If some of you saw my other thread where I was having problems with one of the drawings giving me the insufficent memory error message, you will know where I am coming from with this next question.

For my examples Im going to give the project on my HD a name of Project A, and the project on the server Project B. Project B is the one having the drawing issue.

-- First, I took the same exact drawing .dwg file from Project A (My HD) and replaced the dwg. in Project B folder. I still recieved the same problems.

-- Now since step 1 didnt work, I figured I'd try to create an exchange drawing from the Project B drawing, and then import it into Project A.

When I open that drawing up after importing it, Im prompted to rename the tags. I select incriment by "None", this should keep all of the same tag #'s from Project B (which is 100% identical to project A).

Guess what, that's not the case. When I told it to incriment by "None" it wouldnt let me get by having the same line #'s in the drawing. I can kinda understand why it would want you to change it, but it also gives you the option to link tag.
Other than giving everything a #B#, linking the tags seems to be the way to go... so I say what the hell, the project is backed up, so I link everything. I let it go through it's steps, I then regen all external data... and guess what I receive... The Error wheels or as another co-worker says, red wagon wheels.

So, this makes me even more confused on exchange drawings. The first time I messed with them, I understood I couldnt link the arrowheads, so I just go over that idea. Then come to find out I had to delete all of the lines that were coming onto that P&ID or going off of it. So at that point, I was unsure of how much time the exchange drawing really saved me.

Now that I have tried to exchange in the same exact drawing from a twin project and it wont let me even do that... what is the point in exchanging a drawing? Maybe there is something I am overlooking such as the program giving the key tag fields a different id number. That would be odd in my opinion.

So to sum it all up, is it even possible to bring in a single drawing along with it's database (for just that drawing) and allow it to work when it's an indentical drawing to the drawing you removed from the project?

yes, I think you will get the "cannot overwrite tag no" when the tag number you're trying to write is a different tag type. Check that out and make sure when you delete a drawing that you remove all the data as well. I would also be very careful about having identical projects on your machine, I have had 'learning" experiences when I did that in the early days. I learned not to do it. :)

before importing the exchange drawing say for ex from proj A to proj B,be sure that you have deleted the drawing from proj b.and while deleting b sure that u have checked both the options while deleting .And check i the databse ,that dwg is is deleted.
