View Full Version : Your Computer Specs
Hiya. I have touched on this before but I would like to know what you are all using at work.
I am on a Dell Precision M65 laptop.
Dual core 1.8Ghz
2GB ram
POS quadro video
80GB HD
20in flat panel + laptop screen.
Mine works pretty good for my part but I hear the 3D guys bitching a lot. In the Keith Bentley video I have linked to in the header, he talks about how dual core and hyperthreading does not give a performance boost for microstation users. I can tell you it works great for my 10 windows open at a time.
We just ordered an Alienware to benchmark vs. a comperable Dell.
Most of our designers use dual 20's.

Computer Information
Type: DESKTOP
Model: HP Workstation XW6000
CPU: 2.80GHz
Hard Drive: 40GB
Monitor: 10-15 year old 21" NEC CRT boat anchor which barley fits on the desk top of our new cubicle layout.
I just read in another thread some of you have dual flat panels. Man am I jealous of you all. I have been watching Sams, Target etc for sales since this place won't give you a new monitor unless yours breaks or you are new employee which then you get a new setup.
We are using an outside firm to do a design for us this is first time ever for us to use an outside firm to do a design. Well I am the lead on this project and had to visit their office walked into their design room and low and behold they run with dual flat panels. They told me they went to dual panel once they started to use PDMS.
Okay off my soapbox now……

Specs:
Dell Precision 670 3.00GHZ Xeon
2Gb ram
XP Pro
Nvidia Quadro FX 1400 128 MB w/ 2 Dell 1907FP LCD panels
80GB HDD
No complaints here. I really like the dual screens and am pushing to have all the designers get them. (I'm the only one right now). When you think of what one 21" CRT cost a few years ago vs. how inexpensive the dual LCDs are, the increased ability to not have to rearrange things to get things done pays off quickly. When we got one of the panels in to check it out, the 19" LCD had the exact same size viewable screen as the Viewsonic 21" CRTs we were using.

All designers and Admins use duel 21" flat monitors
Biggest problem we have is getting a good video card. We switched to the ATI 700 but have now upgraded to the 1300. Seems to work much better.

All designers and Admins use duel 21" flat monitors
Wow your admins have duel's. Why is that?
Tom, sounds like you need to get in someones ear about your equipment. Windows 2000 AND a CRT, there's no excuse for that!

No kidding we have been trying.
Three out of six in here have windows XP. I was told by IT since the lease on this machine is up early next year that they won't load XP unless I have a system break down. I do have something wrong now with either my profile or something else because the find tag in P&ID doesn’t work and I get error messages all the time when using SpecGen. :(

The company I work for is looking at giving ALL employees dual monitors as they see the benfit of the work flow for all diciplines. As admins we get the duals now because I am constantly in the models and I have whined loud enough that they would rather give me the extra monitor than listen to me... might not sound good but it is the truth.

Aplant Monkey,
I apologize I thought you meant admins as in secretaries. See they call them admins here now.
they won't load XP unless I have a system break down. :(
also known as a screwdriver. :) Nah, just goes to show you how short sighted or detatched from the "need" some IT departments are...did you say lease?!?
