View Full Version : Autoplant Catalogs
Remember, there are no stupid questions - only stupid people who ask them...which brings me to my question.
What is a catalog and how is it used in Autoplant?

well dave didn't you ever hear your grand dad talking about going out to the out house with the Sears Catalog.
O you are talking about the catalogs for the 3d side of things. Correct? Before the new specgen came along almost all of the Manufactures specs for valves, flanges, olets etc. were in one database file. When Bentley took over they roll out the Manufactures specs to their own separate databases and called them catalogs. Within the new specgen you can attach these catalogs separately instead having to load one larger database. Hope I have explained this correctly.

Tom is correct. Think of the catalog like a list of all parts you will need in a 3D project. It will outline everything from decsription to part number to weights if you want. Spec Gen is then just a filter that allows you to select the items that you will use for that particular spec.
Maybe that helps?

The Catalog like a standard, for example ANSI-ASME, it used to store as a paper, but in AutoPLANT, it stored as a MDB file.
The Spec like a PIPING CLASS SPECIFICATION, it used to store as a paper too, but in AutoPLANT, it stored as a MDB file.
Sometimes, specs is a subset of a catalog. sometimes, specs is a intersection of two or more catalogs. It means that a specs can include not only one catalog's components.
Thanks fellas. That makes sense. Our spec DB's are the catalogs then?

Catologue's are the DB's containing all the components sorted into separate DB's based on Manufacturer / Standard or however you choose to divide them up.
Spec DB's are created containing only the components required (approved) for use on any given job and are created by selecting only the components required from any number of Catalogues (manufacturers / Standard)

In AutoPLANT,SpecGen is a tool of filter. There is filter the useful of your project from catalogue. So the new MDB is Spec from catalogues. But you should knoe one spen can filer from one or more catalogues by SIZE,Gtype,Stype and many fields.
