View Full Version : different insulation size on a pipe run
is it possible to have two different sizes of insulation on the same process line?
What would we do in the situation of the insulation size needed to change at say a reducer?

To my knowledge there is not the ability to do this. The problem we ahve is that insulation is linked to the Process Line rather than the Run. If it were linked to the run it would allow different sizes for each run which of course is reality. The problem we have had is when line goes from outside to inside. There is no longer the need for insulation often yet it still reports. This has been brought up to Bentley several times but it still seems to be a problem.

most companies have the insulation as part of the spec, so a spec break could be used to switch insulation.
I've often switched the insulation fields from the process to the pipe-run
table. this requires changes to tables, views and dialogs.
Changes to individual runs (after placing reduction or so) should be made manually. For Ansaldo in italy I modified the spec break command into a line break command, that breaks the lines on 3 different fields. A global break command that allows to select what fields in the pipe-run will stay (copied over) and which will be updated would be perfect.
If everyone requests this to the Bentley support, you can move it up on the (long) list of 'future enhancements'

Hrmm, that's not a bad idea. I know here we have different insulation requirements for inside and outside of buildings (obviously). So that might be a good thing to send to Bentley and request.

Not too sure I agree with a Spec break at a size change or an insulation change. Spec should have nothing to do with those catagories. Switching the Insul to the Run table would be very usefull though, then an input for each run would be possible rather than one for the entire process.
Right now we just have an annotation string with the instulation left off for that case. Spec break already breaks the line into separate runs of course. I wonder how difficult it would be to reverse engineer but alas, who has the time. That would be a nice mod to have.

BUMP... this is an old thread than I need to address again. Has anyone come up with a method whereby you can assign a separate Insulation thickness to a run and not have it associated to the Process data. I have a Process line that has several different thicknesses throughout its length. I thought at some point this had been addressed and was fixed but I seem to be in the same spot I was 5 years ago.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to add fields to the pipe_run table (don't use names that already exist in process table, or you'll need to add aliasses later on ... ), to the different process views and in the CATT-dialogs.
It's also possible to tweak the catt command to propagate the default values from process to pipe runs (if they don't have a value) .
easy said and easy done if you know how to ...
