View Full Version : Do you have a designated Bentley Project Administrator?
I was curious as to how many of you are the dedicated guy/gal for setting up projects for your respective companies. Do you also draw the P&IDs? How do you ensure users are inserting the components properly? Do you audit the DB from time to time to make sure Instruments, Spec Items, and Tie points are attached to lines and that the drafters are following standards or wait till it comes out on the lists?
I have some views set up in DM that tell me what instruments/components are not attached to lines/equipment. I also draw P&IDs as well so I fall behind on the project maintenance portion of my job. Just curious what your responsibilites are. I assume that someone setting up the projects makes around 40k a year, or is that low?

The company I work for has it's own department of Aplant Admin people. so yes to your question that I am a Aplant Admin, no I do not draw anymore. I audit DM usually once to twice a week for all the various reasons.
and 40k sounds very low to me but that would depend on where you live I guess.

It all depends on the CAD system you use and what level of Support you do. If you Admistrate ALL projects for your respective company then yes 40K is to low. As a bare min. I would say 30$ an hour or $60,000 yearly This may also depend on experince level (if you have more then 5 years add 10 to 15 grand). You must remeber that this is a NICHE field so there is no job description on ANY WEBSITE that matches.
This is just my opinion....... :D

Hey Colby...
are you the Colby that lives in Austin ??
I think we worked together in Calgary a couple of years ago on the Big ED project with FLour
Very good, thank you fellas. Autoplant Monkey, can you provide details on what your job duties are? I only ask b/c I create and set up all the projects, and administrate the 2D portion (P&ID drawings, lists, views, etc..) in addition to drawing the P&IDs. Just got a new guy thank god but I am right around the 40k mark and reviews are coming...Also, until my employer discovers this site, :P I am employed full time and not a contractor. Thanks!

Hello All,
I am the dedicated person to setup the Projects. I also take care of any of the bugs, patches etc. I occasionally work on P&IDs but my main work now is on 3d Piping, Structural, ISOs etc. I was the dedicated Specs person for the 3D Model but I finally had a chance to show another person on how to use the newest SpecGen so he can fill in when need be. To sum it up in a nutshell I do it all.
I have been working here now for 21 years and only make around $32 an hour.

Is that Canadian or US dollars?
$40 an hour US is about right for mid-level suport
wow, thanks for the info Aplant Monkey. Sounds like I am the lite version of what you do. Should be good for high $20's though (US). We'll see what happens.

sound to me like you are more than just a light person. you seem to have a very good understanding of most things that ADMIN guys have no idea about. Maybe time for a career change??
Aplant Monkey, do you have users setup or is everyone "supervisor"?

Hey Davve,
no we have idividual log in's for each dicipline, never would I give the users a supervisor log in.
does that answer your question? :?
Hi Brian, good to know thanks. This was in reference to this post: http://www.davetyner.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18
I would like to set up users but have not delved into it due to:
a. time
b. the level of BITCHING I got from everyone when I proposed it accusing me of wanting to set up user accounts just so I could point fingers (&@%!'n users!!)
c. having the time.
Once I set it up, is there a .cfg or ini file I can copy across to all projects?

sorry I assumed that you meant through PA. I have never done it through SQL or Oracle
Oh yes, I did mean through PA. Glad to hear it's working out for you! Might be time to give it a go.

we even go as far to break down the users in different groups ie. piping lead would have different abilities than regular pipers and Engineers could have different access again (would rather they have no access but ???)

We don't have any person who is the administrator to setting up projects. That is why we deal with so many headaches. I am the new guy at the company and have only been here about 8 months now and I've helped to control documents but not much has changed as far as administration.
When I was at the BE 2006 Conference they pushed the fact of having 1 or 2 at most admins for setting up project because of how easy it is for someone to change something or do something wrong.
Im still in college getting my CADD degree and currently I make 13/hr. this is VA and the company is small, and the pay level sucks. We have had 2 people since I have started leave and go to Texas and Atlanta.

I too am the ONLY one in the company (2 office locations) that does bentley and autocad support. My duties are much like Aplant Monkey's.
