hi guys I have been wondering and searching for a while on how to open .pid files if any one has any clue please let me know becasue I can't find it anywhere.
.pid files are Smartplant P&ID files. You need SPPID or SmartSketch to open these file types.

oh thx so much. i dodnt know smartsketch could open it. can you also make changes to those pid files or only view them in smartsketch???
SmartSketch can modify .pid files.
SmartSketch Viewer (Freeware) and SmartPlant Markup can also open .pid files for viewing/mark-up purpose.

needs the PID files to publisch the PIDs on the (intra) net.
If the PID file is not there, the "View Drawing" functionality is not working but displaying a blank drawing.
When you try SmartSketch to open *.pid files, keep in mind to use the right combination of versions SmSk - SPPID, so that you have the same RAD kernel.

SmartPlant Markup can be used as stand-alone file viewer for .pid files. Publishing to SPF is not required. In such case, mark-up file (.red) will be saved in local HDD.

hey guys I opened the pid files and when I tried to save them to dwg format it gave me an error "Error in igrSaveAs412 - SaveAsFSaveAs SaveForeignAttachments described as: Permission denied, Error Number is: 70" so I converted the pid files to dgn and then to dwg but when I opened dwg file it was blank. so any clue as to what the error means.

Which version of SmartSketch are you using?
As Patrick_Aps pointed out, it must be a compatibility matter between SPPID and SmartSketch.

Open the drawing in SPPID
It has the capability
File-> Save As -> DWG, DXF or DGN.
So there is no round-trip with SmartSketch needed.

im using smartsketch v5.00.21 and i did try the save as method to save it in dwg and dxf files but it gives an error that I sohwed above and it just saves the files as igr file. so I saved the pid file to dgn file and then to dwg and it worked but the only problem that I saw was that the text in dgn and dwg file was bigger then the pid file text so alot of the texts were intersecting each other.

A main reason for this is that SmartPlant PID uses the font Arial Narrow a lot, and this may be converted to an Arrial-like font in MicroStation and further in to AutoCAD
In SmartSketch you can control the font that will be used in the DGN or DWG that you create
Tools->Options -> Tab "Foregn Data"
choose MicroStation and then the button "Options" on the right for Export options.
This 2nd dialog has a tabsheet Font that will do the mapping from the SmartSketch (TrueType) font to the MicroStation (v7 format) Font number.
Playing with the settings may have the result that fonts are not changed a lot after conversion.
