View Full Version : SP3D Name Generatorserver not generating names on workstations
We have configured SP3D name generator service on the server(Windows server2003 R2 service pack 2) and under the identity tab we have defined an administrator user with administrative privileges on that machine. When i log in as the same administrative user the name generator service is working fine and it gives the names properly. But when i try to connect from our user workstations this service is not supporting and gives the object name as "unspecified". I have already added all the users in the DCOM user group. Please help me if anybody knowing why this is happening.

Hi Jain, is MSDTC service has been correctly configured on the User workstation's also?? Has it been added to Windows Firewall? Make sure to check all other Sever and Client Configurations have been performed correctly..
I already done these settings but still it showing the same error. Whenever i place any object using default naming rule it coming as "unspecified" in the name box. we have an admin workstation and in this machine it is working properly . but all the other workstation showing the same problem .
Did you add network DTC Access and Network Com+ Access on Naming Server?

Add the Name Generator User ID to the Power Users group on the server. Also check if you have granted access to your SP3D users under Security--> Logins for the Sp3D project databases. Remove and re-add Registered server(on which Name generator component has been installed and configured) on user's machine.
Another way u can try is re-installing the Name Generator component and then make sure that to add the ID having proper rights on the databases.
I didnt get these two points. Could you please expand these.
Also check if you have granted access to your SP3D users under Security--> Logins for the Sp3D project databases.
Remove and re-add Registered server(on which Name generator component has been installed and configured) on user's machine.

Security--> Logins is in SQL Server 2005 where u grant access to the project users on the SP3D databases.
For Remove and re-add Registered server, try it from the user machine where SQL Server 2005 client is installed. Remove the Registered server name from the List of Registered servers and Add the name of you Server where Name Generator service has been installed.
Actually we are using Oracle as Database (10.2.0.4) and version of SP3D is 2009.1 HF5

You reported that you succeeded to generate name when you log on to name generation server. So I don't doubt about the function of the name generation service itself.
Most possible cause is the workstation that fails name generation.
Did you install Windows DTC support as option with Oracle client tool?
Did the workstation succeed to generate name with other name generating service with Oracle ever before?
I have already installed Microsoft transaction service for Oracle in all the workstations. It generate name in only one workstation which is an administrative user in name generator server. So name generator service is running successfully. But the other workstations not able to generate the names.
Did you try to logon with administrative user on the workstation which failed to generate name with non admin user-logon?
If that will generate name, it means something wrong with user privelage settings.
In my environment, all users are registered as administrator on name generater server.
i have tried with adding users as administrative users in the name generating server . But still i am getting the same thing. it seems like strange..
So most possibility is client-server communication not user privileges.
Did you additionally install enable network DTC / COM+ access component?
Did you install any security software which has firewall function on the name generating server?

Hi Jain.. I agree with Tim.. Check if u have added MSDTC and RPC(port 135) in Widnows Firewall Exceptions on user as well as on Name Generator server machine.
I have already added these ports to Windows firewall. Also our windows firewall is turned off.
Earlier our NG machine was Windows Server 2003 R2 Standared edition Service pack 2. I have tried all the known ways in this . But failed. Now we have changed our NG server to Windows XP. Now all is working very fine. I am not sure whether there is any problem with our earlier OS.
