Created by some amazing people who were given an amazing opportunity by an amazing company.
Huge thanks to the Krusty Krew and Autodesk!

Wooooow,
Really impressive, guys.
Did you manage to get some isometrics drawings out as well, or should we consider the project at the end of a "Basic Engineering" phase ?

Is that the Silver Surfer at the top of the construction crane??? B)
We were wondering how long it would take someone to point that out!
I think that was Aaron Wernings idea!

Very cool video. I'm wondering if our Dave might abandon us for Hollywood.
I'm featuring it at my main page (has to be below the Feynman video, though).
Well done,
Paul

My remembering of "the bay area" is mostly a cab driver from the airport charging me $150 to get from San Fransisco airport to my hotel in Fremont. With junkets you don't have a lot of choice.

Impressive!
Can AutoCAD Plant 3D handle bigger project? I was told there is no database behind it, don't know whether this is true.

You can work with it where the data is in the .dwg files (along with some .xml files in the project for the project data storage), or you can convert an active project into a database mode where the data is stored in an external database. The project size seems to be comparable to AutoPLANT, but with a few performance issues in the 2011 release. But we are working with Autodesk on these issues and what we are seeing are AWESOME improvements!

Thanks for your explain, Aaron. What did you use to create steel? How easy for you to create a spec?

Plant 3D has a "lite" steel package that pipers can use to spot in the steel. Autodesk's plan is to have that steel exported to Revit for detailing and drawing creation (although that functionality isn't available in the 2011 version yet). And then to close the loop, their plan is to grant the ability to xref in the Revit model into your Plant 3D interface.
Spec generation was pretty easy. I only edited 2 existing ones, but was able to grasp what it would take to make a new one. The filtering tools for the catalog were real easy to used and then adding those items to a spec was fairly instantaneous. The Catalog editor seemed like it had great tools for adding content on a small scale, but adding content on a larger scale would be cumbersome (but I know that this issue is being looked at by Autodesk as well). They do provide a spec converter to convert your AutoPLANT catalogs and specs into Plant 3D ones and it works GREAT! We were seeing 98% and 99% conversion success and tested them in the model with no problems at all.

Impressive video, hopefully Autodesk will continue to develop this leaning heavily on user input.
