I am trying to make a change to the default Long Descriptions within my catalogs. I know that I have done this before in earlier versions. I am currently using V8i SS2 and when I try to make a change to the LD it allows the change in the preview box however when I Build the Catalog it won't make the changes to the actual line items.

Do you mean that within AP 3D model the component doesn't read the modified LD?

yes that is correct. the output from the Spec to the BOM in the Iso is NOT the modified LD that I want to see but rather this mixed up mash of crap that can be seen in the spec when doing a preview. However as I did mention that when building the LD in the Catalog I can preview it correctly however when I build the catalog it doesn't return the concatenated version correctly

Sorry, more questions,....

Is it just existing components or newly placed components giving the error?

Have you tried the Piping>Database Tools>Update from spec command from with in your model?

Have you tried changing the LD's in the spec, as opposed to the catolog?

it is all components regardless of when or how they were placed.

Yes I have tried to do an update from spec with no luck

I can over ride the LD from within the spec itself in the LD builder BUT this is not the path I want to follow as it will take WAY TOO long to do a line by line change nor am I going to do a typing edit of the LD as this can and will cause its own problems.

thanks

OK, I'm only running a single small project so changing the LD within the spec is the way i'm going for now.

Sorry I wasn't much help...

Wanna re-raise this issue as I now experiencing this. It's only happening to my bolt sets on a new catalogue I've set up.

As AP, everything is fine within the catalogue and spec gen preview, but when inserted into the model the long description for bolt sets is different.

Did you get anywhere with this AP?

bolts often have their own description setup within the .ebs routine. have a look in there and you will find the LD for bolts. this is not the same as the problem I experienced.

Waferbolts also have their own description field that is in the waferbolt.ebs. I am not 100% sure if regular bolts are effected the same as the Wafer bolts. someone will chime in here shortly to point you in the right direction for sure.

There are 2 places that the LD build can be set. One is in the main menu of Specgen. This one sets the default build for the entire spec. The other is on the individual rows under each section. You would simply highlight a row and right-click to set it there. For the most part, the default one is normally useless because legacy specs already have a row-specific LD build assigned to them which overrules the default one.

NOTE: If you are on XM or earlier, DO NOT delete the entire field when in the row specific description build dialog or it will delete that field for the entire spec for all rows as well as the default build. It was a recognized bug that was fixed in V8i (I believe)...one that I had to learn the hard way.

there is another way to set the LD of an item that Aaron has left out :D.... you can open the catalog as well and set the LD in the Catalog, then in the Spec leave the default LD to be <long_descp> it will then take whatever is written in the catalog as the default. This is the prefered method if you have catalogs broken down into sub categories such as PIPE, ELBOW, TEE.... etc you can have the LD be the same for ALL items within that category.

Thanks AM, changing the waferbolts.ebs and the specupd.ebs did indeed sort out my issue, as above not the same as the OP issue. Sorry for the slight hijack

S om a similar note then... does the LD of a regular (non wafer bolt) get controlled outside of the spec the same way that a wafer does? if so what file controls this? is it the bolt.ebs? Funny how I know how to fix it one way but not the other.

Waferblt.ebs modifies the long description of bolts in wafer type connections only. For non-wafer connections the long description for bolts is per the spec.
