Hi,
Just wondering if there is a way to change the label item type without losing labels that have already been created.
Thanks

Hi, Worley. Can you give a brief example of what you're trying to do?

I also didnt understand question. I am sure you know about cloning existing symbol/Label.

Basically I would say:
Create a copy of the original Sym file
modify this new symbol with the Catalog Manager and change the Item Type of this new symbol
then use the "Global symbol replace utility" to change all the already placed symbols with the new one.
If this is not what you try to accomplish, or it does not work for you, please clarify what you are trying to accomplish and why...

Is there any way I can get around this?

I think you are trying to change existing symbol. As Patrick mentioned , first make a copy of symbol which you want to change.
open that in catalog manager , change labeled item type. save, use global symbol update utility.
