Hello im starting to learn autoplant, and Im stuck atm in the project admin part, I was hoping to get some information about the part of the databases in the new project creation, what are the differences inside of autoplant for each type of database?

The classic answer is "it depends." What databases does your company have, what size of project? Do you have Oracle or SQL server?

There is no difference in which one you use, it will build your projects the same. There is a bit more to do with Oracle than SQL server.

they are mostly using access, but are seeing on changing databases, to start to join all projects into one database, they asked me to look up for the differences in them to see what is the best.

Since it's always possible to switch between databases (through the 'Project Packager' tool), it's not that important which DB you start with. I would however advise to start with a mdb database since that is much easier to configure. Once the configuration is 'stable' you can switch to SQL or Oracle.

check attaches document with some considerations about the different formats.

thanks PeterJ, any other consideration i should take into account? we are looking into using also navisworks to view the autoplant files for reviews and comments while the model file would be only modified with autoplant.

If you are using Navisworks besure to install it before AutoPLANT so that it can read the objects. You may have to go into the Global options and under file readers where DWG is at change the render type to Shaded instead of Automatic, also change the DWG loader version to the version of AutoCAD you are using ie. 2010. If AutoPLANT is already installed before you install Navisworks, be sure to install the object enablers for the versions you are using, ie. V8i for ACAD 08-10 and prosteel version if you have structure. Also check your global options as well.

thanks grinch, i would imagine that if we dont have the object enablers setup navis wont be able to pull the cad files?

Edit: Also i being looking more foward and what is the BAse Schemateic Template, and whats the difference betweens Standard Base Project and KKS

Those are just industry standard naming convention. KKS is mainly used in Europe where Standard base is used in United States. You can find more on KKS here: http://www.kronebach.com/kks/e/index-e.html.

thanks for that.

Another thing that i finally found while looking at the sample projects, with the users, is there any explaining on the different types and what each do and when you go into security i understand a few but not all of them, is there any way to know what each of them mean?

there are three different standard types of projects that are default selections. Imperial, Mixed Metric and Metric. Each are the same aside from the unit values. Imperial uses Inches for measuring and all units, where as both Mixed Metric and Metric use Millimeters as their primary unit source. Mixed Metric is different in that it will display all units in Imperial (dimensions) however will use mm for design purposes.

Hope this helps

Mixed metric shows length in mm and diameter in inch.

1.
KKS is typically used in power plants.
2.
there are no 2 companies that use KKS in the same configuration
3.
KKS is hell to configure (your instrument balloons take half a page ... )

1. yes typically used in power plants, but from my experience has been in European countries. 2. I know, a division of my company, that is in Europe, uses a modified KKS. 3. I agree with you on the configuration part.

thanks all for your helps, i was able to create the project using mssql without a problems (only thing was that int he network someone forgot to enable tcp/ip on the sql server so it was impossible to get on it).

Now the problem im facing is the users, i create a user but no matter what i give him it wont let me get in the project for that user
