need help with Positioning labels and xrefs?

I am trying to place an intelligent position label of a structural member in my drawing.

First I xref the structural model into my drawing.
Change all the settings associated with "Positioning" to get my "Name" label for steel members.

I get this error when placing the "name" label:
Select element to be positioned:
* WARNING Cannot write into XREF part, assign first item number in XRef

What does this mean?

I am able to place a steel member in my drawing and label it just fine (see "ex" example).

Please help... Thanks

So this problem only exists on xref'ed items? It seems like it is trying to write the label into the xref file instead of the main file you have open.

Yes. Only exists when I try to label Drawings. I can get it to work fine in the actual ProSteel model. Don’t know whet the error is trying to tell me.?

It does sound like a write capability issue to me. Have you been able to label items that were in xref's before?
